Why chmod still matters in 2026–2028
Containers, VPS boxes, CI runners, and shared hosts still speak classic Unix modes. permission denied is usually a wrong 755 / 644 / 600. This page keeps the job tight: a linked rwx grid, octal you can type, symbolic + chmod ready to paste — no ACL lab, no Windows permissions bolted on.

FAQ
What does chmod 755 mean?
Owner can read, write, and execute; group and others can read and execute (rwxr-xr-x). Common for directories and executable scripts.
What about 644?
Owner read/write; group and others read only (rw-r--r--). The usual mode for normal files that are not private.
What are setuid, setgid, and sticky?
They are the leading octal digit: setuid (4xxx), setgid (2xxx), sticky (1xxx). Sticky is common on shared directories like /tmp (e.g. 1777).
Is this the same as Windows permissions?
No. This tool covers classic Unix mode bits only — not NTFS ACLs or Windows rights.
Does recursive (-R) change files on my machine?
No. The checkbox only adds -R to the copied command string. Nothing runs on your system from this page.
